All reptiles carry deseases, some are even poisonous. That is the reason we buy them and place them in a Glass tank or aquarium. They are not meant to be handled as puppies and Kittens, which by the way can also cause deseases with their bites or scratches. To make a story short. Handle and treat pets as they are meant to be handled or treated. In response to the turtles causing Salmonella.

These little wonders are notorious carriers of Salmonella. My young son and I both got sick from one of these little critters! Box turtles, and many other reptiles, can carry salmonella bacteria which can make humans, especially young children, the elderly, and persons with compromised immune systems, very sick. Every one who handles the animal must wash their hands with anti-bacterial soap afterwards. When cleaning the enclosure, do not use the kitchen sink, and do not allow items like food dishes or cage furniture in areas of food preparation. Be careful with those little turtles.
